Where Is My Stopcock?
Inside your home: Usually under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cupboard, or in the garage. It's a valve on the main water pipe coming into your property. Turn it clockwise to shut off water.
Outside stopcock: On the pavement near your property boundary, under a small metal cover marked "water" or "W". May need a key to open. Turn the valve clockwise. Note: outside stopcocks often seize up or are covered in mud.
Can't find it? Call us and we'll talk you through it over the phone before arriving. Knowing where it is before an emergency happens is ideal. Check this from Water UK for your supplier's contact details.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much do emergency plumbers charge in Liverpool?
01
Emergency plumber costs in Liverpool vary widely. We charge fixed hourly rates: £80/hour weekdays (8am-5pm), £120/hour weekends (8am-1pm), £150/hour out of hours (nights/holidays). No call-out fee. Most emergency jobs take 30-90 minutes. Parts charged separately at cost. Total cost typically £120-£350 depending on the job.
Are you Gas Safe registered?
02
Yes, all our engineers are Gas Safe registered for safe boiler and gas work. It's illegal to work on gas appliances without this qualification. You can verify this at gassaferegister.co.uk. We provide gas safety certificates for all work.
What if you can't fix my emergency?
03
We fix 95% of emergencies on the first visit with parts we carry in our van. If we genuinely can't due to needing specialist parts or major work (e.g., entire boiler replacement), we'll make the situation safe, give you a detailed quote for the full repair, and arrange to return. The call-out is only charged for diagnostic time.
Can you work on old Liverpool houses?
04
Absolutely. With 30+ years experience, we specialise in Liverpool's Victorian terraces, Georgian houses, and period properties. We understand old plumbing systems, lead pipes (common in pre-1970 Liverpool houses), ancient boilers, and unusual layouts. We bring them up to current regulations safely.
What causes most plumbing emergencies in Liverpool?
05
The most common emergencies we attend: (1) Burst pipes in winter due to freezing - Liverpool's old houses often have external pipes. (2) Boiler breakdowns - many Liverpool homes have 10-15 year old boilers reaching end of life. (3) Blocked drains - tree roots in Victorian sewers, fatbergs from cooking oil. (4) Water tank overflows - ballvalves seizing in loft tanks. Prevention tip: annual boiler service and knowing where your stopcock is.
Should I turn off my water in an emergency?
06
For burst pipes, major leaks, or flooding: YES, turn off water at the stopcock immediately. For boiler problems, gas leaks, or blocked drains: NO, leave water on. If unsure, call us immediately on 07399676656 and we'll advise you over the phone what to do while we're on our way. Citizens Advice has a helpful guide on emergency water situations.
Do you do commercial emergency work?
07
Yes, we cover commercial emergencies 24/7: offices, shops, restaurants, hotels, warehouses. Same rates as residential. We understand business can't wait - lost trading time is expensive. We can invoice with 30-day payment terms for established businesses. Required by HSE regulations to maintain safe plumbing systems.
Can I get a quote over the phone?
08
For emergencies, we give price ranges over the phone based on what you describe (e.g., "burst pipe is typically £120-£350"). The exact quote is given on-site once we've diagnosed the problem. For non-emergency work like boiler installations or bathroom refits, we can arrange a free quote visit at a time that suits you.
Do you provide certificates for insurance claims?
09
Yes, we provide detailed documentation for insurance claims including: itemised invoices, photos of the damage/repair, gas safety certificates (where applicable), and written reports explaining the cause. We're experienced in dealing with insurance companies and their requirements.
